What Is Fascia and Do I Have It?

Yes, you do! We all do.

It is the gliding system that makes our bodies move so freely.

Fascia is a seamless 3-dimensional webbing of the entire connective tissue system. Connective tissue is composed of collagen, elastin and a polysaccharide gel complex called ground substance. Superficial fascia lies directly below the dermis. Deep fascia covers, weaves, infiltrates and fuses with: muscle, bone, nerves, arteries, veins, as well as surrounding all internal organs. At the deepest level fascia surrounds the central nervous system; the dura mater-within the cranium, brain and the spinal cord. It is an uninterrupted system responsible for maintaining sound structural integrity. Fascia provides support and protection. Fascia acts as our body's shock absorber.

In a normal healthy state fascia is hydrated and pliable with the ability to glide and stretch freely. Through trauma, injury, surgery, postural compensations or any stressful combination, fascia loses its natural hydration and pliability and becomes tight, twisted, and tough as if you were a piece of tough leather. Prolonged stress, tension and/or unresolved emotional upset also contribute to fascial restrictions anywhere in the body.
